Our New Favorite Ice Cream

September 19, 2014

Deep, dark, salted caramel ice cream. As if we haven't had enough of the salted caramel craze. If you are a fan of salted caramel, if you are not a fan of salted caramel, if you are getting tired of salted caramel, you can't not have at least one scoop of this baby at least once in your life. This ice cream is life-changing, trust me.

I think I haven't written "salted caramel" that many times in a paragraph before. Anyway, M and I were walking back to the car on our first visit to Tartine (lengthy review coming soon) when we spotted quite a long line outside some store. We stopped to see what the fuss was about and saw that we were right in front of Bi-Rite Creamery. As if we haven't had enough food yet, we decided to have a scoop of ice cream and jumped into the end of the line to get a little taste. Best decision of that weekend.

We didn't just get one scoop, we had four. M had a scoop of the salted caramel ice cream and another of their malted vanilla ice cream. I had honey lavender and coconut strawberry. Of the four flavors we sampled, the salted caramel clearly was the standout. It was kind of an ice cream epiphany that every day after I tasted this, I wanted to go back and get some more. Second place went to honey lavender, which I think will be great as a midnight snack.

And we did come back! After two weeks, we sampled another three of their flavors - roasted banana, balsamic strawberry, and chocolate. Salted caramel was still the best out of all the seven flavors we sampled so we got ourselves a quart of the salted caramel. Haha! We still have some sitting in our freezer.

You see, this is not the typical ubiquitous salted caramel you can find in groceries. It has a punchy, bold, almost-burnt caramel flavor, and the sweetness is just right - you can definitely finish a quart of this ice cream in one sitting without feeling sick at all. It is very creamy that even after 3 days in the freezer, scooping it is a dream. Yes, 3 days without tearing into this was an amazing feat of self-control.

I've managed to make the same almost-burnt caramel only once before so for Bi-Rite Creamery to churn out tubs and tubs of this ice cream with the same consistent taste only means they've figured out the science of perfect caramel every single time. If you're in the San Francisco/Bay Area, be sure to check out Bi-Rite Creamery! You won't regret it.
