2014 Favorites

January 8, 2015

I wasn't sure if a post on 2014 favorites would be a good idea but I thought that it would be nice to compare favorites year after year and see if anything's changed taste and flavor-wise. Last year was mostly chocolate and macarons. Hehe. I hope you find something here that tickles your fancy and inspires you to try it at home.

M and I went back to lifting weights September of last year. Since then, hardboiled eggs have been a staple in our diet. They're filling and rich in protein. I discovered how to make the perfect hardboiled eggs from Serious Eats and I've been using the same method since then.

This dark chocolate cake was the first 4-layer cake I have ever baked. It's not too complicated - save for the pulled sugar swirls, which are completely optional. You don't need fancy piping for the frosting - just slap the frosting on the cake and you're done. If I have to pick only one favorite, this would be it.

We were on our way home from Yosemite when we chanced upon a fruit stall near Gilroy where we bought fresh, juicy, and sweet strawberries. The frosting on these cupcakes is so simple and easy to make and the sweet diced strawberries make these cupcakes the perfect summer dessert.

My macaron adventures started with salted butter caramel macarons so they will always have a special place in my heart. Making the perfect dark caramel is still a challenge for me but I guess practice makes perfect.

In 2014, I discovered that homemade croissants are completely possible. It takes a bit of time (2-3 days to be exact) but making it is not as complicated as it seems. So if you're up for a bit of a challenge this year, make your own croissants. You can do it! Trust me.
